Understanding The Benefits Of 4th And 5th Axis Rotary Tables

The first milling machines were invented in the early 19th Century and greatly increased capabilities surrounding the manufacture of metal components.  The milling machine saw the introduction of rotating shaping tools; whereas the lathe before it had non-rotating tools, with the piece to be shaped being spun.  The milling machine went through various developments and improvements and by the 1860s it rivalled lathes as one of the most commonly employed industrial tools.  Perhaps the biggest innovation in the world of milling machines was the introduction of rotary tables, which served to add a 4th and latterly 5th axis capability to the milling process.

Examining the mechanics

The purpose of all rotary tables is to rotate the piece that is being shaped by a set number of degrees; thus allowing shaping of the material at exact intervals.  Whilst rotary tables can be used in all manner of applications, the most basic example of their use would be to create regular grooves or holes in an object.  Through rotation of the rotary table you are able to shape the object on a 4th axis in addition to the 3 that a standard milling machine provides.

The invention of rotary tables with a tilting mechanism has served to provide the ability to apply the milling machine on an additional 5th axis.  Through tilting the object either up or down the tool is able to approach the object at varying angles.

Benefits of rotary tables

Using a 4th axis rotary tables serves to greatly reduce the amount of time that it takes to shape an object; without it you would be forced to reposition the object several times to get the same result.  5th axis rotary tables also save time in the same fashion; however they are usually only necessary for the manufacture of more complex parts.  Through the removal of the time that it takes to manually reposition components and also the negation of man power, rotary tables play a large part in reducing manufacturing costs.  The precision that they provide also helps to promote uniformity in components and provides a quality that could not otherwise be achieved.

At Kitagawa Europe we provide a wide range of high quality 4th and 5th axis rotary tables that are suited to all manner of application.  For more information on any of our rotary tables or other products call our helpful staff today on +44 (0)1725 514 000.  Alternatively you can email us direct at uk@kitagawaeurope.com if you are based in the UK, or at export@kitagawaeurope.com for the rest of the world.
